Why Acclimation Matters

Wood naturally absorbs and releases moisture based on its environment. Allowing it to acclimate ensures it reaches the ideal moisture level, reducing the risk of warping, cupping, or gaps.

Factors Affecting Acclimation Time

Several factors influence how quickly wood acclimates:

  • Wood Species
  • Wood Thickness
  • Initial Moisture Content
  • Environmental Conditions (temperature and humidity)

As a general rule, allow at least 1 week per inch of wood thickness. In some cases, more time may be necessary.

How to Use a Moisture Meter

A moisture meter is an invaluable tool for monitoring wood acclimation. Follow these tips for accurate readings:

  • Select the Correct Setting: Ensure your meter is set for the specific wood species.
  • Prepare the Wood: Clean the wood surface to avoid interference from finishes.
  • Take Multiple Readings: Measure in several spots to obtain an accurate average.
  • Monitor Over Time: Regular readings help you know when your wood has stabilized.
